Manufacturing & Engineering

Compliance software for South African manufacturing and engineering.

Manufacturing compliance is dominated by machinery. The General Machinery Regulations require competent engineering supervision, statutory equipment carries mandated inspection intervals, and machine guarding failures are among the most common findings a Department of Employment and Labour inspector will record. Add quality management under ISO 9001 and the same plant is being audited against two different frameworks on overlapping evidence.

Which regime applies

Primary instrument
OHS Act 85 of 1993 with the General Machinery Regulations
Regulator
Department of Employment and Labour
Why it matters
GMR 2 requires the appointment of a competent person to supervise machinery. That appointment, its acceptance, and the competence behind it all have to be demonstrable — not merely asserted.

What this sector has to prove

GMR 2 and engineering appointments

Appointments have to be in writing, accepted by a competent person, current, and matched to the plant they cover. SHEQ24 manages the appointment chain with digital acceptance and expiry alerts, so a resignation or a lapsed certificate does not quietly leave machinery unsupervised.

Statutory equipment registers

Pressure vessels, lifting tackle and other statutory equipment carry mandated inspection intervals. Each asset gets a register, a schedule and an inspection history, with QR scanning in the field so the technician records against the right asset rather than the right-looking one.

Machine guarding and inspection findings

Guarding audits generate non-conformances that need routing, ownership and closure. SHEQ24 raises the NCR at the point of inspection and blocks closure until the corrective action is evidenced, which is the difference between a finding that was fixed and a finding that was noted.

COID reporting and injuries on duty

When an injury on duty occurs, the OHS Act Annexure 1 report is generated from the incident record rather than retyped, and the Compensation Fund submission is tracked against its deadline.

The modules that carry most of the load here

The full platform is available regardless of sector. These are the modules that do the heaviest lifting in manufacturing & engineering.

Manufacturing & Engineering questions

Does SHEQ24 track pressure vessel and lifting tackle inspections?
Yes. Statutory equipment is registered as an asset with its own inspection interval, history and responsible person. Overdue inspections escalate, and field technicians scan a QR code on the asset so records attach to the correct item.
How are GMR 2 appointments managed?
Appointments are issued digitally, acknowledged with a binding electronic signature, and tracked against both the appointee competency certificate and the plant covered. Expiry alerts fire before an appointment lapses.
Can the same system serve our ISO 9001 quality requirements?
Yes. Document control, internal audits and corrective actions are shared across safety and quality, so the same evidence base serves both an OHS Act inspection and an ISO 9001 external audit rather than being maintained twice.
